Kidney and homeostasis... Dissection went down very well with year 11, I got 8 lanbs kidneys at a time in boxed from Tescos for about £2 each - the class had one between 2 for about 6 quid. To do the 'Gaining and losing water', and ADH bit, we made a game. A4 piece of card, box drawn in the middle, saying 'water balance'four smaller boxes going up from the central box saying 'dead' in the top one. Draw an arrow from the water balance box saying 'too much water - brain swelling!' Going down from the middle box, draw about 6 boxes, bottom one says 'dead' arrow going down saying - dehydrated.

Kids make a set of cards each, showing the way the body gains and loses water; eat, drink, wee, poo, water vapour (respiration), also one that says ADH. Pupils play in groups of four or fiveish. each has a counter (or scrap of paper with their name). Teach starts them off. They take a card each and move their counter accordingly. If they reach 'dead' they are out of the game. ADH will bring them back to balance from dehydrated, but not from the other way. Teach signals end of game (whistle? Music stops in my case), or they can play until only one left alive. Prize for winner if you like. Next lesson they (nearly) all remembered what ADH did and how, and the ways we gain and lose water... suspect I'd have to play them Hotel California a few times to get the tune in their heads and be subjected to another chorus of groans and comments along the lines of "You've got cr*p taste in music, miss!"

Enjoy! The Excretion Song (to the tune of "Hotel California" by Don "loop of" Henle, et al) Lyrics by Brooks Park West Hills High School Science Department On a warm West Hills walkway, NOT walking on the grass Just finished my Reading Logs for my favorite class, Up ahead in the distance, I’d have to run or be late, The line was long and my bladder full, I had to stop to urinate. This is the story of the kidney, and it starts with the cell, I shouldn’t have had 15 refills at Taco Bell, Well the cell takes in the sugar and releases the wastes which travel through the blood stream to RENAL arteries and veins. Welcome to the nephron in the kidney Its for filtering wastes to maintain homeostasis Filtering wastes in the nephron of the kidney any time of day it filters UREA away... Blood flow in the glomerulus capillary pressure is high, Plasma can leak through the walls, but blood cells can’t get by, In the Bowman’s capsule, filtrate is taken in, Bad stuff stays in the tubule water is absorbed again. The tubule is definitely twisted both proximal and distal don’t forget the loop of Henle like a trombone slide in the middle These tubules do an important job so your kidneys you should not "DIS" If they stopped functioning You’d be hooked up to Dialysis.. Welcome to the urinary bladder Its a storage place for your nitrogenous wastes Storing it up in the urinary bladder what a nice device... helps you keep your thighs dry.... Our story continues in the collecting duct Where the urine flows Into the RENAL PELVIS, And then the URETERS, you know where it goes To the bladder which fills u And sends a message to your brain To eliminate the bad stuff again and again..... I was a little late to class, Its one I would hate to have missed, My BIO teacher was really, really cool He wasn’t even....MAD, And in my empty bladder I could feel it filling again because those hard-working kidneys filter twenty-four seven.... AIR GUITAR SOLO.......to fade Optional (alternate) Chorus: Welcome to the excretory system, it filters and stores even while you snore Filtering blood in the nephron of the kidney keeps ion levels in their places to maintain homeostasis

When doing homeostasis i like to have a glass of "urine" on the desk, and discuss how doctors diagnosed diabetes in the old days by tasting the urine to see if it was sweet, then take a big gulp of the "urine" (cloudy apple juice) - never fails to get a reaction!!
