Simple distillation - distill red wine, you then end up with 2 products which you can easily show are different 'cos one is flammable (and the other one puts flames out) When teaching about mixtures, and how mixtures can have different components in different ratios, I used water to demonstrate the point. I explained how tap water and mineral waters have different quantities of minerals inside them, showing a label from a couple of different brands of mineral water. I explained that this might affect the taste.

Simple distillation - distill red wine, you then end up with 2 products which you can easily show are different 'cos one is flammable (and the other one puts flames out)

When teaching about mixtures, and how mixtures can have different components in different ratios, I used water to demonstrate the point. I explained how tap water and mineral waters have different quantities of minerals inside them, showing a label from a couple of different brands of mineral water. I explained that this might affect the taste. We then had a taste challenge where three samples were given - 1 was tap water, one evian (from france) and the other a scottish mineral water. The class made predictions as to which they thought would taste best - Evian being most popular. A couple of students then did the taste test. They were able to identify tap water straight away, and identified that there were differences in taste between the other two. The Scottish one came out tops.

Explain that a high profile celebrity/teacher/footballer has been kidnapped and the kidnapper has left a ransom note written in green pen, which police have analysed using chromatography. Pupils are given a selection (3 or 4) green pens and have to work out which one belonged to the criminal by matching it with the kidnappers pen using chromatography. Could be made quite fun by telling pupils the owners of the pens too.

I do something similar to that but using black pens and a story of a monkey who was getting notes bullying him! Great opportunity for commenting on bullying and also lots of silly monkey pictures on the powerpoint. The year 7's love it! Even did it at an interview where the classes got mixed up...Bottom set year 10 also loved it lol!!
